Kind of excited about this - especially since it's where I live :) I always regret not seeing the Elton John ballet.

Subject:Let's just see what tomorrow brings.
Posted by:shadow2serenity.
Time:8:55 pm.
For posterity, I kept a setlist in classic Hip style whilst watching the livestream of the Kingston show on cbc.ca:

And for further posterity, here's my running commentary from a thread on a Due South forum during the show.

I'm watching the live broadcast on cbc.ca right now. They just started Hundredth Meridian!!!! \\\\\\0//////

I so hope they jam during the break....

I'm in a constant state of flail/sniffle/flail right now.

ETA: MacKenzie, you'll be amused to know that Gord just ranted for a couple of minutes about what's gone wrong in the far North.

EATA: The look on Paul Langlois's face has me wondering if they know something we don't....as does Gord S....

EFTA: Gord D. is %&()*ing AMAZING.

ETAF: "A singer needs to keep his or her voice warm....it only took me 28 years to figure that out." XD You're welcome, Gord-lord.

ETAA: OMG, he's playing with the mic stem. That's our Gordie. <3 NO THIS ONE THING DOES NOT HAVE TO GO AWAY!!!!

ETAOA: They all hugged and cheek-kissed at show's end. Oh. My. :'( There are no dry eyes in that concert hall....or in my loft where I'm watching.

ETAM: ENCORE!!!!! Starting with New Orleans is Sinking!!!!! THANK YOU.

ETAAOA: Aw, I was really hoping he'd say 'same Gord Downie thing' instead of 'same Elvis thing.'

ETAA: WOW. Justin Trudeau was at the show wearing a TTH T-shirt to boot....and Gord commended him for taking on the problems in the far North. Holy frick.

ETFA: Oh my lawd. Final song is 'Scared'. Final line is gonna be 'I gotta go, it's been a pleasure doing business with you.' D: :'(

ETAOM: Ooh! Wait, they're doing 'Grace, Too' now! OH YES.

ETASE: Oh my God. You should have seen him trying to keep it together during the rideout to Grace. :'(

ETA!!!!! "We're officially into uncharted waters....we never do third ones (encores)....so let's see what happens." \\\\\0/////

ETOFA: Well....guess that was it. :( 'Ahead By a Century' was the final number. "No dress rehearsal, this is our life," indeed. But the way they all lined up to wave goodbye to the crowd....I'll never forget it. :'(

Personally, I hold that God put Gordon Downie on this earth to make music that people wanted to hear, and to write lyrics that people needed to hear. He's accomplished that mission hundreds of times over. Now I think he's got a secondary mission - to make the world wake up and smell the coffee with regard to brain cancer (as well as the social strife hanging over the far North of Canada). There are people who are still hanging on years after being diagnosed with glioblastoma, and the band has even dropped several glaring hints that they're not done yet. Depending on how Gord holds up for the next little while, I'm holding out hope for a pleasant surprise in the form of a new album and/or a charity concert or two, aimed at raising money for brain cancer research.

Meanwhile, there's a website, Dear Gord, open for the submission of tributes, Hip stories, and especially thank-you notes. I've already thanked Gord for curing the rainiest day of my life (as described in my last posting here). Skip on over and leave your own thoughts - he thanked the crowd for "keeping him pushing" on Saturday night, but he deserves thanks from a lot of people for keeping them pushing, too.

Subject:How'd it get this late so early....?
Posted by:shadow2serenity.
Time:9:34 pm.

I was fifteen going on sixteen when the above scene played out on Due South, all of twenty-one years ago.

I have been a quadcore Hipster ever since.

I've seen the Hip live three times. The first time I saw them live was in 1998 during the Phantom Power Tour, at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom. Earlier that year, I had been falsely arrested on charges of criminal mischief (which were soon dropped in the absence of a case). Less than a month after the case was dismissed, the Hip came to town. Standing near the sound panel during the show, I got a glance at the setlist: the encore was to consist of 'Grace, Too', 'Bobcaygeon', 'Fire in the Hole', 'Inevitability of Death', and 'Locked In the Trunk of a Car'.

But at the last minute, they changed a couple of songs on the encore. Instead of Fire, IOD and Locked, they played 'Little Bones', 'Vapour Trails'.... and best for last, 'At the Hundredth Meridian.'

And it was one of the raging-fast 15-minute Meridians with which they've wowed uncountable fans over the years. Mind absolutely blown. I was on cloud nine for days afterward, saying to myself, So I guess that made it all worth it.

By no means was that the only time the Hip cured a rainy day. For years, whenever I or a friend was going through a rough time, I had only to whip out one of Gord's inscrutable and yet profound lines, such as "there's no simple explanation for anything important any of us do", or "an accident's sometimes the only way to work our way back to bad decisions." Friends who had never heard of the Hip would ask me to describe their sound, and I would describe it along the lines of "Canadian Pearl Jam" or "thinking man's Aerosmith." I don't think there is a rock musician alive today who is as thoughtful or insightful as our Avant-Gord.

Now it's out: he is alive today, but tomorrow, who can say.

There's so much about his situation that makes me terribly sad and disappointed. This could be the end of the Hip as we know and love them; mind you, I REALLY hope that isn't the case, although how they would get on without Gord is anybody's guess. But even if the rest of the band does hold together, we're losing a remarkable human being, one who has brightened so many days, has inspired so many people to keep on keepin' on by his lyrical genius alone. Worst of all, this must be unimaginably hard on his family. It's pretty well known by now that his wife had breast cancer about five years ago, the outcome of which is their business and theirs alone; but one life-threatening illness coming on the heels of another is not an enviable affair for any one family.

I may not be a member of that family, but nevertheless, I feel as if I'm losing a favourite uncle. I've lived by many a cryptic yet thought-provoking Gordism, and I'm really going to miss them. Still, it was heartening to watch a video of his doctor describing his spirits, which remain high, in spite of the "Inevitability of Death"....and just by that he's lifted my own spirits like he's been doing for the last twenty-odd years.

The show's not over yet.

I hope and pray that Gord's family, his bandmates, his friends, and his infinite fans will continue to stand by him whatever may come: for all we know, some miracle of medicine might happen and he might stay with us a little longer than we thought. However long he has, I also pray - and I ask you to pray with me, if you're so inclined - that he will make it through this upcoming tour, that the rest of his time amongst us will be peaceful, and that his command performance for God will be an eternal success.

Time:11:01 am.

This. Oh, this. So, so this. Judging by the amount of sweat drenching Gord's shirt, I would say this is pretty late in the show, perhaps during the encore....were any of you there perchance? This brings back one hell of an unforgettable from my first Hip show in Hampton Beach in '98. The encore included a very similar rendition of 100th Meridian; suffice it to say, that one'll stay with me. May it please the comm, how often do they do a raging-fast 100th Meridian like this??

Greetings from Alberta where we've just had some, uh, water problems! I just realized how many Hip songs are about water, or at least dangerous weather. No official video for this song, but it was always a favourite...Phantom Power is one of my favourite Hip albums, and it was mostly about weather...

For the f-list!Collapse )

Gord Downie also got the water spot in this song featuring titans of socially conscious music, Midnight Oil...love this song...

Hey guys! I was just exploring the community today, and thought I'd give it a little nudge by posting six of my drawings. :) They're all of Gordon and Paul though, unfortunately. I always mean to get around to drawing Gord, Johnny and Rob, but never have! Anyway, these span all the way from 2006 up until now, and were all done with a variation of graphite pencils. :)

I'll do the rolling, you do the detail...Collapse )

Does anyone have the lyrics to "You See the Details" or can someone help me out? I just can't make out the line at the beginning where Gord sings "The last and the best [something something] is dead". It's been driving me crazy for years and I can't seem to find it on Google.

Subject:My budgie is hip to The Hip
Posted by:calzephyr77.
Time:5:59 pm.
I know this might be the dumbest post ever, but Boots or Hearts is playing on the radio right now and Mr. Moxie is twittling along to it. Any time I play The Hip or it comes on the radio, he just perks right up. He hasn't been very chatty lately either because he's been a little under the weather. I don't know how to explain it - although I did have a budgie with a penchant for Fats Domino :-)
